What is Generative Engine Optimization?

The practice of making your business the answer AI gives, explained without the hype.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your website and brand presence so AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews) cite your business when they answer a question. Where search engine optimization earns you a position in a list of links, GEO earns you a place inside the answer itself. That's the whole idea. The rest is how.

Why this matters now

A growing share of buying questions never reaches a results page. Someone asks an assistant "which agency should redesign our booking system" or "best way to get my shop online in Malta", and the engine replies in a paragraph. That paragraph names one, two, maybe three businesses. Everyone else is invisible: not on page two; nowhere.

The engines compose those answers from sources they can read cleanly and trust. Whether you appear is not luck. It's the direct result of decisions someone made, or didn't make, about your website.

They are not enemies. GEO stands on solid technical SEO: a site that can't be crawled can't be cited. But content that ranks isn't automatically content an engine can quote. That gap is where GEO lives.

What the work actually is

  1. Access. Let AI crawlers in. Many sites block GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot in robots.txt without ever deciding to; usually copied boilerplate. Decide deliberately.
  2. Citability. Engines quote passages, not pages. Answer the question directly in the first paragraph. Use headings that mirror real questions. State facts an engine can lift whole: numbers, definitions, steps.
  3. Entity clarity. The engine must be certain who you are. Consistent name, structured data (Organization, Service, Article), the same story on every profile that mentions you.
  4. llms.txt. A plain-text map of your site written for language models: what you do, what matters, where to look. Minutes to write, and it's read.
  5. Presence in trusted sources. Engines lean on directories, reviews and publications they trust. Being listed accurately in the right places is the new link building.

How you measure it

Ask the engines your buyers' questions, monthly, and record who gets named. That's the metric: citation share. It moves slower than a rankings dashboard: engines re-read the web on their own schedule, so first citations typically land four to twelve weeks after implementation. When they land, they compound: engines keep citing what other engines already cite. The early movers become the reference.

The businesses AI cites today will be very hard to displace tomorrow.

Where to start

Read your own site the way a machine does. Is the answer to "what do you do, for whom, where" in the first hundred words, or buried under a hero slider? Can a crawler reach it? Would a paragraph survive being quoted alone, out of context, and still make sense?
